Dorset general practice surgeries offering community support to those who need it most
One in five older adults across Dorset face financial vulnerability and 90% of these people are also living with one or more long-term health condition.
To support those most affected, local general practice surgeries partnered with councils, voluntary groups, and healthcare organisations this winter to deliver a series of Winter Wellness events that offer practical support to help people stay well, especially during the colder months.
So far, more than 750 residents have attended an event, which bring together 15 local organisations including LiveWell Dorset, Citizens Advice, Help and Care, and social prescribing teams in general practice.
The support on offer includes:
Blood pressure checks
Frailty and mobility advice
Help using NHS apps and online services
Applications for financial help (e.g. Household Support Fund)
Mental health and wellbeing guidance
Marlene, 83, from Bournemouth, attended the Winter Wellness Event at East Way Clinic.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Living Mindfully session and movement session we did. I’ve since upped my daily exercises and it’s given me more motivation and confidence. My end goal is to go out walking on my own again.
“Getting out to meet people feels so important and to have a connection with others again. It’s a real boost to my mood.”
Dr Ben Sharland, GP partner at Central Bournemouth Primary Care Network (PCN) said,
“We wanted to create a welcoming space where people feel comfortable accessing help. We hope that people left the events feeling more in control of their health and finances. These events show what’s possible when healthcare, councils and the voluntary sector work together. Thank you to all the staff who have been making this happen.”
Clare Dodd, Senior Care Coordinator at Poole North PCN, said
“At our Poole health events I have seen how bringing general practice into the community has made a real difference to people.
“Blood pressure checks, screening advice and mental health support have been really well received. Especially our clinics in the local pubs where we have reached people who might not usually come forward for health checks.”
For people with financial and health concerns, there is a dedicated webpage offering guidance on staying healthy and financially secure: Stay well financially this winter – Stay Well Dorset.
