What to Expect at the Autumn Membership Event?

Welcome to the Dorset General Practice Alliance Membership Event: Innovation in Green Practice

You will hear from inspirational speakers about how primary care can ensure a healthy and sustainable future for practices, staff, patients and the planet.

Practices who have made simple changes and made a difference to the health and wellbeing of their communities …… and saved money!

**A demonstration of the Dorset Green Primary Care Practice Guide** will take you through the choices you can make, from simple steps, to bigger decisions to reduce, reuse, recycle and make savings!

A number of ‘green’ organisations and groups will be happy to chat to you at the breakout session, to give further information.

Then it’s your turn to get involved – download the Dorset Green Primary Care Practice Guide on your mobile using the QR code and explore the options available to you.   Share your ideas by answering 4 brief questions during the event. There is a prize for the best idea!

Speakers

Dr Forbes Watson - Welcome and Introductions

Dr Forbes Watson is the Chair of the Alliance and is a GP in Lyme Regis. Forbes was previously Chair of the Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group and Vice Chair of the Dorset Health & Wellbeing Board. Forbes has extensive clinical and system level experience and will ensure that the voice of general practice is not just heard but is at the forefront of how decisions are made in the Dorset ICS.

Tim Goodson - MC event

Tim was previously the Chief Officer at Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group and Dorset’s Integrated Care System (ICS) lead. Tim is a qualified accountant and has over 18 years NHS Board level experience, including that as Director of Finance.

Celia Canter - Dorset General Practice Alliance Project Lead

Celia joined Dorset Primary Care Trust in 2001 as Business Manager when there were only 3 people in the organisation!  She went on to become Communications Manager, Complaints Manager, PALS Manager and Locality Manager when Practice Based Commissioning was introduced, and later Commissioning Lead for Primary Care.  Celia has experienced much organisational change – from Primary Care Trust to Clinical Commissioning Group and more recently to Integrated Care Board.  She retired from the CCG in 2019, returning as bank Project Lead for Primary Care until March 2024.  Celia now enjoys her role as part time administrator in the workflow team at Prince of Wales Surgery in Dorchester.   The opportunity to lead the Green Practice project has been amazing and she has learnt so much about how practices and individuals can do their bit, no matter how little, to address the climate changes we are witnessing.

Stuart Lane - Sustainability & Carbon Manager, University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust (UHD)

Stuart grew up locally in the New Forest and lives with his partner and son in Bournemouth. Stuart spent 4 years living in Brazil in his early 20’s where he experienced the magnificence of unspoilt nature and also devastating environmental destruction. Stuart later moved to Ireland where he freelanced for IBM over 5 years, assisting organisations from a wide range of sectors including, agriculture, petrochemical, electronics, automotive, pharmaceutical and public sector. In his mid 30’s Stuart left corporate consulting to settle back in the UK and became an active environmental campaigner. He has led a number of successful campaigns including one that prevented a planned oil well in Swanage and a national anti-fracking campaign which helped to bring about the current national moratorium on fracking. In his 40’s, Stuart gained a Masters in Green Economics and took employment as the Sustainability and Carbon Manager for University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust where he now oversees the UHD Green Plan

Dr Matt Sawyer - GP

Dr Matt Sawyer worked as a GP for nearly two decades in the North East of England. Now, he runs an environmental sustainability consultancy – SEE Sustainability – working to improve human and planetary health. He covers sustainability issues facing healthcare including understanding their carbon emissions footprint and helping to produce roadmaps and action plans to meet the NHS net zero ambition. He has a MSc in Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Management.

Dr Tamsin Ellis - The Village Practice, Islington

Tamsin is a salaried GP in North London and an Associate at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare where she helped design and facilitates the sustainable primary care course. She founded the Greener Practice London group in 2020 which has since grown into North and South London. She has previously worked as North Central London ICS Net Zero lead for Primary Care and was a climate and health sustainability scholar for the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), North East London. She is interested in the crossover of sustainable primary care with improving health equity. You can hear more about her work on the Four Thought programme ‘Climate Consultations‘ @Climate_GP

Samantha Hubbard - Practice Manager at The Village Practice, London and Islington PCN Green Lead

I have spent the last 4 years investing big green changes at my practice and am now proud to be North Central London’s most sustainable GP practice. I run a practice which is in the heart of Islington which has a lack of green spaces and high air population which drives me to make as many changes as we can to support my patient’s health and wellbeing.

Charlotte Carson - Community Sustainability Lead, Frome Medical Practice

A lover of mountain biking, yoga and allotmenting. Charlotte has a background in sustainability in the theatre and events industry, now bringing the same passion and energy to help drive the sustainable movement in Primary Healthcare. Curious about how working across community and GP practices, we can create positive tipping points towards climate action in healthcare and improve the health of both people and the planet.
